HILLSBOROUGH: News from the senior citizen clubs

CHAPTER A

Our next monthly meeting is Thursday, Feb. 5, and our speaker will be Linda Rapacki from Ridewise, a source of sustainable travel alternatives in Somerset County.
Trips & Programs
Fri., Jan. 23 — Live cooking demonstration, “Cook with Sam,” the registered dietician for Hillsborough ShopRite, at 11 a.m. in the Senior Activity Room.
Thurs., Feb. 12 — “Singalong With Your Sweetie” Valentine program at 2 p.m. in the Senior Activity Room.
Fri., Feb. 27 — Lawrence Welk tribute at the Brownstone in Paterson. Cost is $68 for members and $78 for non-members. Depart from Lowe’s parking lot at 10 a.m.
Thurs., March 12 — St. Patrick’s Day show, “Abie’s Irish Rose,” at Hunterdon Hills Playhouse, near Clinton. Cost is $52. Bus departs 10:30 a.m. from Lowe’s parking lot.
News & Notes
All Hillsborough seniors age 60 and older are invited to join Chapter A. Younger spouses of seniors are also eligible for membership. Dues are $5 a year and new members may join at any meeting. Our membership chairman is Loretta Tansey at 908-359-1171.
Doors open at 11:30 a.m., allowing time to review upcoming events and make reservations. Refreshments are available at noon and after the meeting, too.
The rescue squad will be present at every regular meeting to check blood pressure. We encourage our members to go into the Senior Activity Room before the meeting and take advantage of this service.
Help our Food Bank by bringing an item to each meeting.
Senior room activities:
Shuffleboard, pool table, darts and ping pong are available to all Hillsborough seniors. The computer room is fully equipped for your use and enjoyment.
The pizza and movie program will restart in March.
Monday: Knitting, crocheting and needlepoint from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Tuesday: Bridge from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Tripoli at 1 p.m., cards from 1 to 3:30 p.m. and pinochle from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Wednesday: Mah jongg from noon to 4 p.m. Canasta from11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Thursday: Bridge from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Friday: Mah jongg from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

CHAPTER B

Our next monthly meeting will be Feb. 12. Be sure to pick up your list of meeting dates and upcoming trips if you have not already done so. Doors open at 10:45 a.m., at which time members can buy tickets for upcoming trips and other events.
Activities and Trips
Special event — The Hillsborough Rockettes and Rocket will perform at the “Hillsborough Got Talent” show at the high school on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. Tickets $15. Come out to support our Club B Rockette members and all the performers. Votes will be sold for $1 each.
Bingo will resume Feb. 26.
A trip to Doolan’s St. Patrick’s Fest in Spring Lake is scheduled for March 16. Irish singer and band, complete choice of dinners, wine and soda with dinner, transportation. $71.
A trip to the Radio City Music Hall Spring Spectacular on April 15 is sold out. Transportation, lunch, great seats. $118. Waiting list is being compiled.
A two-night trip to Villa Roma in Callicoon, N.Y., is scheduled for May 20-22. Three days includes six meals, nightly music and show, indoor sport complex with bocce, shuffleboard, ping pong, video games, swimming pool, Jacuzzi. $320/double or $390/single. Tickets sold in March and April.
If any trips are sold out, you may call to add your name to a waiting list. On all trips, you should bring photo ID and health insurance card(s).
Community Events
Jan. 16: Movie, “Gone Girl,” 7 p.m., in the library. Call to register.

Jan 24: Roast pork dinner at South Branch Reformed Church.
Keep in mind the township’s Mr. Fix-It program, run by the Social Services Department. Minor home repairs can be arranged on Wednesdays between 8 and 11 a.m. for Hillsborough seniors 60 and older. Call 908-369-3880 for details.
A free exercise program available to all Hillsborough seniors is held in the municipal building Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Classes are led by certified instructors. Free transportation is available. Call 908-369-3880 for details. Current participants with regular attendance also enjoy many free classes at the Hillsborough YMCA.

HILLSBOROUGH SENIOR CENTER

 
Adults age 60 and older are invited to visit the county-operated Hillsborough Senior Center at 339 South Branch Road. The center is open from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. Its phone is 908-369-8700.
Exercise with Rose every Tuesday and Thursday, 11 a.m. The program includes games, stretches, walks, chair fitness and strength training movement. Learn to play mah jongg Wednesdays at 10 a.m.
Transportation is available.
Enjoy lunch for a suggested donation of $1.50 or more. (Price for guests under 60 is $5.35). Call 908-369-8700 before 10:30 a.m. the day before to make a lunch reservation.

Jan. 20 and 27 — Mind Your Mind total brain workout, 11:15 a.m. Sharpen your mental prowess in memory skills, flexible thinking, perception and reasoning.
Jan. 21 and 28 — Certified yoga instructor Lucy Pagnetti will guide participants through light stretching, gentle flowing movements, deep breathing exercises and meditation. 9:45 to 1:45 a.m. The Jan. 7 class is free and each additional class is $5, payable at the start of class. Jan. 21 — Samantha Nunzio, dietician from Shoprite/Wakefern, will show healthy breakfasts that can be made ahead of time.
Jan. 22 — Bridgewater Roxies dance performance at the Manville Senior Center.
Jan. 23 — Visit to the Manville Senior Center for the “Bridge Builder in Petticoats: Emily Warren Roebling and the Brooklyn Bridge” program by Carol Simon Levin of Somerset County Library’s Bridgewater branch. Built between 1869 and 1883, without modern machines or even electric light, the bridge was one of the most technological achievements of its time. Yet few people know that a woman helped supervise much of its construction after her husband became bedridden. Later she helped design the family mansion in Trenton, studied law, organized relief for returning troops from the Spanish-American War, attended the coronation of the csar of Russia and even took tea with Queen Victoria.
