– Help with utility bills available

In addition to providing affordable housing resources, the Affordable Housing Alliance (AHA) manages several utility assistance programs to address a need many area residents have.

These programs help individuals and families who are seeking relief in paying their gas, electric and oil bills. There are three utility assistance programs offered by AHA, according to a press release.

The Temporary Relief for Utility Expenses (TRUE) and the Payment Assistance for Gas and Electric (PAGE) programs, funded by the state Board of Public Utilities, are annual assistance programs designed to help low- to moderate-income households across New Jersey who are struggling to pay their electric and natural gas bills.

The third program AHA administers is the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which assists low-income households, particularly those with the lowest incomes that pay a high portion of household income for home energy.

The program provides grants in the winter so that such households can pay their heating bills and continue using heating equipment, according to the press release.

These three programs provide assistance to an average of 14,000 households per year.

Anyone interested in applying for utilities assistance is asked to note that the deadline to apply for TRUE is Feb. 13, 2015. AHA must receive all applications by 4 p.m. Feb. 13 at an AHA or an affiliate office.
