– Training available for volunteer advocates

180 Turning Lives Around (180), a private, non-profit organization that provides support and advocacy to victims of domestic violence, will conduct a 40-hour mandatory training course for Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT) volunteers. The application deadline is April 3.

Training will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6-9:30 p.m. beginning April 13 in the courtroom at Hazlet police headquarters, 255 Middle Road. The program will end May 7.

180’s volunteer DVRT advocates are civilian members of the community who work collaboratively with law enforcement to provide support, information and referrals to victims of domestic violence at police headquarters. Advocates also discuss with victims safety planning and their legal rights in obtaining a temporary restraining order. Trained advocates help empower victims to make informed decisions for themselves and their families.

Volunteers must be 18 or older, have access to reliable transportation, possess a valid driver’s license, be willing to serve on an on-call shift basis, participate in an interview process, submit to background investigations and fingerprinting, and successfully complete the mandatory training. Bilingual capability is helpful. Prior knowledge of domestic violence is not required. The identities of the DVRT volunteers are kept anonymous.

For an application or additional information, contact Tina Morgan, assistant coordinator, at [email protected] or 732-264-4360, ext. 4272.

The confidential services of the DVRT program are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For more information, visit www.180nj.org.

– Library seeks program volunteers

The Long Branch Free Public Library at 328 Broadway needs volunteers for new programs and initiatives.

Social workers are sought to help plan and coordinate a resource day to be held at the library on a regular basis. Volunteers would need to commit to attending planning meetings at least monthly. Once the program begins, volunteers would participate in regular evening programs open to the public. These will be offered at least quarterly and may become a monthly event. Volunteers will work closely with Library Director, Tonya Badillo, and Project Coordinator, Nekesha Marshall. A master’s degree in social work is required.

The library seeks an experienced knitter to run a knitting group that would meet once a week on a weekday for two or three hours. The volunteer will teach others how to knit and provide tips for more experienced knitters. The volunteer should have good knitting skills and a patient and outgoing personality.

An expert backgammon player is needed to start a backgammon group at the library. A patient and friendly volunteer is needed to teach those who have never played and others who wish to improve their skills. The volunteer will monitor games and teach by playing with novice opponents. The program will be offered for two hours on a weekday once a month initially, with hopes to expand to once a week.

The library also needs volunteers with strong skills in alphabetizing and classification to help with filing and keeping collections in order.

For those interested in volunteering, call Janet Birckhead at 732-222-3900, ext. 229. For more information about the library, visit www.longbranchlib.org.
