FRANK GALIPO SHREWSBURY — Spring is in full bloom, and the Shrewsbury Garden Club kicked off the season with the annual Gardeners Market, where perennials, herbs, fresh vegetables and more were available.

The event was held May 9 at the borough’s Gazebo Garden, located within the municipal complex on Sycamore Avenue.

“It is our largest fundraiser of the year,” club member Maureen Collins said.

Funds raised help the club maintain numerous gardens throughout the borough, including the Colonial Herb Garden at the historic Allen House, the Gazebo Garden and gardens at Borough Hall, and the Shrewsbury Historical Society building.

Collins, who has been a member of the club for the past eight years, said the market has always been a successful event and is a great way to generate funds.

According to Collins, the group was hard at work over the previous weeks, potting spring annuals for the event.

Collins said one of the nice things about the event is that the plants are coming straight from club members’ own gardens. “It’s always a great feeling to know that these perennials are being grown here and coming from our own members’ gardens,” she said.

As part of the event, the club hosted a “green elephant” sale, with outdoor treasures such as gently used gardening tools, pots, books on gardening and plant species, and patio furniture.

The Shrewsbury Garden Club meets the third Tuesday of every month from September through May at the Shrewsbury Historical Society. For more information, visit www.shrewsburygc.com.
