Being written a moving violation is enough of a salvo to the wallet, but a recent report suggests the long-term costs in terms of higher insurance premiums will sting a motorist for years, and can be particularly painful depending on where he or she lives.
According to data compiled by InsuranceQuotes.com in San Francisco, Calif., drivers receiving a DUI citation see their rates rise by an average of 92 percent, with drivers in North Carolina suffering a whopping 337 percent boost. By comparison, residents of Maryland suffer a mere 15 percent increase for their transgressions. On average, the most expensive infractions on a national basis are DUI (92 percent), reckless driving (83 percent) and speeding at 31 or more mpg over the posted limit (29 percent). The least expensive violations include not wearing a seatbelt (6 percent), driving without a license (16 percent) and violating railroad rules (18 percent).
