Visitors invited to Walnford Day

UPPER FREEHOLD — Visitors will have a chance to travel back in time and interact with aspects of the past as Historic Walnford celebrates Walnford Day.

The Monmouth County Park System will celebrate Walnford Day on May 17 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Historic Walnford, Walnford Road, off Route 539, Upper Freehold Township.

The family-friendly event will give visitors a chance to tour the home, which was owned by the Waln family from 1772-1973, according to Karen Livingstone, public information officer for the Monmouth County Park System. The home is one of the largest pre-revolutionary residences in Monmouth County.

The historic gristmill at Walnford will be in operation for guests to observe. There will be a live harpsichord and recorder duet in the front parlor of the house.

Hands-on activities will be available for guests of all ages, and ongoing demonstrations for the day include spinning and weaving, woodworking, and blacksmithing. Wagon rides will be available from 1-4 p.m. Admission and parking for Walnford Day are free.

Historic Walnford is a 36-acre park that is listed on the state and national registers of historic places, according to the Monmouth County Park System website.

The site began as an industrial and agricultural village and family farm with a gristmill in 1734 before evolving into an elegant country estate.
