MILLSTONE — The vice chairman of the Millstone Township Environmental Commission is calling the community’s ninth annual stream cleanup a success.
In a letter to the editor of the Examiner, Doug Lischick said the April 18 event “was a huge success, thanks to all the volunteers who helped by donating their time to make Millstone Township a cleaner place. This was the largest turnout of volunteers, some familiar faces from previous years as well as some new ones.”
Lischick said 60 volunteers joined together for the cleanup that was sponsored by the environmental commission and the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association.
The volunteers cleaned up areas around the Millstone River, including Disbrow Hill Road, Battleground Road, Perrineville Road, Prodelin Way and Rising Sun Tavern Road.
Lischick said the participants collected more than 1,380 pounds of trash in 67 bags, plus 22 bags of recyclable items and three tires.
“All those who participated enjoyed the chance to meet other members of the community and support a common cause,” he said, adding that the stream cleanup will mark its 10th anniversary in 2016.
Lischick expressed special thanks to William J. Johnson, the Clean Communities coordinator, Monmouth County, to the Millstone Township Department of Public Works, and to Lori Maher, the township’s Clean Communities liaison.
Michael L. Pisauro Jr., policy director for the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association, said, “It takes the combined efforts of citizens, volunteers, neighbors and families working side by side to make a difference in cleaning up our water.”
Pisauro said the association works with municipal, county and state leaders, residents and local groups on initiatives and actions to plan smart, grow community, and preserve and protect natural resources.
