Hanlon confirmed as county clerk

Christine Hanlon Christine Hanlon Christine Giordano Hanlon has been confirmed as the Monmouth County clerk by the New Jersey Senate.

“The nearly two months I served as acting county clerk have been incredible,” Hanlon said. “Being the county clerk is an honor, and I look forward to continuing to work hard for the residents of Monmouth County.”

Gov. Chris Christie nominated Hanlon to become the Monmouth County clerk effective April 1 upon the retirement of longtime County Clerk M. Claire French. Hanlon has been serving as acting clerk since that time, awaiting confirmation by the state Senate, according to a press release from the county.

According to state law, the governor has the authority to nominate a successor to the office of county clerk in the event of a vacancy, but that nomination must be confirmed by the Senate to become effective.

Hanlon, a Republican, will run for a full five-year term in the November general election. She will face Democrat Kevin Kane, who is a member of the Borough Council in Freehold Borough.

Prior to being sworn in as Monmouth County clerk, Hanlon, of Ocean Township, was formerly an attorney in the Middletown office of Archer & Greiner.

She served as deputy borough attorney in Tinton Falls, municipal prosecutor in Atlantic Highlands and a commissioner of the Monmouth County Board of Elections.

The county clerk’s office oversees the recording and filing of property deeds and other official documents, the preparation of election ballots, the processing of vote-bymail applications, the tabulation of election totals and the certification of election results to the secretary of state, passport processing and the Monmouth County archives, according to the press release.
