RED BANK — The T. Thomas Fortune Project Committee will hold the fundraiser, “Finding Fortune: Preserving a National Historic Landmark,” 6-10 p.m. June 12 at Two River Theater, 21 Bridge Ave., Red Bank.
Claire Serant will be the keynote speaker. Serant is an English professor at York College and has written several articles and papers on T. Thomas Fortune.
The mission of the T. Thomas Fortune Project is to save, preserve and restore Fortune’s former Red Bank home at 94 Drs. Parker Blvd. as a cultural center.
The T. Thomas Fortune house is one of New Jersey’s two National Historic Landmarks that are significant because of their role in African-American history.
Fortune, a 19th- and 20th-century journalist and activist, was the publisher and founder of three New York newspapers, including the New York Age, which was considered the foremost African-American publication of its time.
Prior to his death on June 2, 1928, Fortune was given the honorary title of dean by the National Negro Press Association. The Fortune family remained at the home until 1913.
Tickets are $75 and must be purchased in advance. For tickets or more information, visit thomasfortunehouse.weebly.com.
