FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP — The Monmouth County Board of Freeholders has tapped an engineering firm to examine an intersection in Freehold Township and design possible improvements at that location.

At a recent meeting, the freeholders passed a resolution authorizing IH Engineers of Princeton to perform professional engineering services regarding the design of improvements at the intersection of Jackson Mills Road and Bergerville/Stone Hill roads.

Jackson Mills Road is county Route 23 and is under the jurisdiction of the freeholders.

Prior to hiring IH Engineers, the county solicited and received statements of professional qualifications from three engineering firms, according to the resolution.

The cost of the engineering services to be performed by IH Engineers will not exceed $92,448, according to the resolution. Any fees for work beyond that amount will be authorized only by approval of the board.

Any improvements that may be made at the intersection are in the preliminary stages, Monmouth County public information officer Laura Kirkpatrick said.

“The project is just getting started. What is going on now is actually an assessment of the area with analysis of various factors to consider alternatives to improve safety at the intersection,” she said.

At the present time, stop signs control the flow of traffic at the intersection. There is no stop sign for traffic on Jackson Mills Road. There are stop signs on the east side of the intersection (Bergerville Road) and the west side of the intersection (Stone Hill Road), Monmouth County Engineer

Joe Ettore said.

The engineering firm will analyze and make suggestions regarding improvements to the intersection, according to Ettore.

“An engineering study for physical improvements needs to be completed and the study will take about 12 months,” he said.

Conditions at the intersection that may be addressed include site distance deficiencies and horizontal lining issues, Ettore said.

Once the engineering study has been completed, recommendations for any work that may be deemed necessary or desirable at the Jackson Mills Road location will be considered, he said.
