Indo American Cultural Society slates annual summer picnic

The Edison-based Indo American Cultural Society (IACS) has announced its annual summer family picnic, set for noon to 7 p.m. July 19 at Merrill Park, Grove 3 (A, B and C), Iselin.

The event will feature vegetarian and nonvegetarian foods, including barbecue items such as chicken and hot dogs; gota; khichu (papdi no lot); soft drinks; ice cream; ice gola; watermelon; and other snacks. Beer will be available for a nominal cost. Liquor is strictly prohibited.

The picnic will also feature music, games and sports activities.

Community leaders and town, county and state elected officials often attend, organizers said.

The organizers are seeking new sponsors to join Patel Brothers, one of the event’s Grand Sponsors, along with many sponsors that are returning from last year, according to organizers.

Those who donate $300 or provide inkind donations of picnic items — such as food, paper products, soda, ice or other products — will have their company logo displayed on the event flyer and display banner. Sponsors will also be recognized at the picnic.

The IACS is also seeking volunteers to help organize the picnic, run activities and serve food.

The advance registration date was July 6. After that date, members must pay $10 per person, including children. All nonmembers and guests are welcome. There was an earlybird entrance fee of $5 before July 6, but admission will be $10 per person after that date or at the gate if space is available. Entry fees apply to adults and children.

The IACS is recruiting new members. Life membership costs $250.

The organization has also announced its Independence Day Celebration and Flag Hoisting Ceremony, set for noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 15 in the parking lot of the First Presbyterian Church, 1295 Oak Tree Road, Iselin.
