HIGHTSTOWN: Flashing sign will remind motorists to slow down

By Amy Batista, Special Writer
HIGHTSTOWN — The borough is installing new signs along Morrison Avenue in an effort to slow down traffic.
One stop sign will be installed at the intersection of Harron Avenue and Morrison Avenue and the other at the intersection of Center Street and Morrison Avenue.
“It is to slow down traffic and to alleviate a bypass through Hightstown,” Mayor Larry Quattrone said, adding that the signage would also help with school crossings.
A flashing sign saying “Stop Sign Ahead” will also be installed on Morrison Avenue to remind motorists to slow down.
Councilman Steven Misiura questioned how long the flashing sign would be there.
“It’s going to be there at least two weeks,” Mayor Quattrone said.
“So for the public they are brand new and we have to try and get the word out that they are there,” he said. “You’re going to get a surprise when you come down the road and be like whoa.”
Tickets will be issued to those who don’t obey the new signs.
The new stop signs come as a result of a discussion held during a council meeting on Feb. 2 during which Borough Administrator Henry Underhill said that Hightstown Police Department Lt. Frank Gendron suggested putting a stop sign at the intersection of Morrison Avenue and Harron Avenue to make it into a three-way or a four-way instead of a two-way stop intersection to allow for more ease in crossing the school children.
Mayor Quattrone also said at that time that it is a problem that people use Morrison Avenue as a cut-through.
