NATURE CENTER NOTES: Learn to kayak on Aug. 1 at Washington Crossing State Park

The following is a list of activities being offered through the Nature Center at Washington Crossing State Park, Titusville.
Some programs are offered without registration requirements; some will require advanced registration as indicated below.
A fee of $5 per car ($7 for out of state) will be charged to motor vehicles entering the park on weekends and holidays through Sept. 7. All programs initially will meet at the Nature Center unless otherwise indicated.
Attendance is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
In the event of inclement weather, some programs might be canceled. It is advisable to call ahead before coming out. Contact the center for information at 737-0609.
Recreational kayaking (pre-teens to adult): Saturday Aug. 1, from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
Those in the market for a kayak, come and learn the ins and outs of kayaking. Participants will have the opportunity to paddle a kayak on the park’s pond.
Kayaks, paddles and adult lifejackets will be provided.
Get advice about selecting a recreational kayak that matches one’s paddling needs. Wear old sneakers or water shoes and be prepared to get wet.
Meet at the Brick Road/pond parking lot. Advance registration is required.
Model river rafts (all ages): Sunday Aug. 2, at 1:30 p.m.
Have family fun in the sun and water. Children will construct miniature models of river rafts at the Nature Center. Activities continue by the Delaware River as the rafts participate in activities and challenges.
Come prepared to get wet. Sunscreen is recommended. Advance registration is required. The park vehicle entrance fee applies.
Paddle the D&R (9 years to adult): Saturday Aug. 8, from 1 to 4:30 p.m.
Take a short canoe jaunt up the Delaware and Raritan Canal skirting the village of Titusville. Meet at the state park parking lot directly across Route 29 from St. Georges Roman Catholic Church.
Advance registration is required.
Night hike (6 years to adult): Saturday, Aug. 22, at 8:30 p.m.
Explore the park for nature at night on this naturalist-guided hike and campfire. Advance registration is required. Bring a flashlight.
Enter the park from the entrance on Bear Tavern Road and follow the event signs to the Nature Center.
Weird Washington Crossing (preteens to adult): Sunday Aug. 30, at 1:30 p.m.
Experience Washington Crossing State Park beyond the Revolutionary War. Hike to explore some unusual and bizarre nature of the park. Learn the untold local history and folklore by visiting “off-the beaten-path” building remnants.
Dress appropriately for outdoors and bring provisions. Limited-seating transportation will be provided.
