WEST WINDSOR: School board candidate seeking reelection

Michele Kaish, West Windsor
I am running for re-election to the WW-P school board to continue advocating for the best educational opportunities for all learners. With my experience — 18 years as a dedicated WW-P volunteer and community leader and 21 years as a West Windsor taxpayer — I will continue to promote what is in the best interest of students while always remaining cognizant of the economic realities faced by our district and our taxpayers.
My husband and I moved to West Windsor in 1994 for the schools. My three sons each attended WW-P schools since kindergarten. My two older sons graduated in 2010 and 2014, while my youngest son is a member of High School North’s Class of 2018.
Since 1997, when my oldest son started kindergarten, I have been a passionate and reliable volunteer both in and out of the classroom, serving in any way that I could — from helping as a room parent and chaperone, to assisting with science experiments and Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop, to supporting music/theatre groups, clubs and sports teams. I have assisted students on their first days of school, teachers in their classrooms, and principals in their schoolwide events. I have held every executive board position in the PTA, including president, executive vice president, vice president, treasurer and secretary, at multiple district schools.
After many years and countless hours spent helping, organizing and fundraising for classrooms, clubs, and teams, I have developed a deep understanding of our school district as well as strong relationships with many of the stakeholders in the WW-P community.
Since being elected to the school board in 2012, my compass has always been pointed towards making balanced and informed decisions focused on what is best for students. I have considered economy and efficiency in our budget, aiming to maximize our resources without compromising the quality of our instruction. I currently serve as board vice president and chair the Administration and Facilities Committee. I have worked on policies that strengthen our educational program and endorsed capital projects that improve and maintain our buildings. I have served on two board negotiating teams with the WW-P Service Association, most recently as the chair. As the board’s liaison to the district’s PTAs and the West Windsor-Plainsboro Education Foundation, I have been able to connect to day-to-day happenings in all 10 district schools and participate in discussions regarding innovative programs and strategic initiatives.
I bring to the school board a long and successful history of leadership, working productively with my fellow board members as well as students, parents, teachers, staff and administrators. Given state budget caps, the prospect of future residential development and the continuous financial pressure of our district’s contractual obligations, our school board needs experienced people who understand the big picture and can work collaboratively to evaluate the multitude of difficult decisions that must be made. I ask for your support and look forward to meeting with members of the community to discuss their concerns.
