HILLSBOROUGH: Suing for access to OTW papers would have been waste, mayor says

To the editor:
“Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.“ — Mark Twain.
I wish that former Democrat Committeewoman Sonya Martin had heeded Mark Twain’s wise words before writing her falsehood-filled letter to the editor on the topic of the pending application for an OTW facility in Hillsborough. The facts are these:
1. At the direction of the Township Committee, Township Administrator Anthony Ferrera submitted numerous written requests to the N.J. Racing Commission for the OTW application. Those requests were denied until early August. During that period, he also placed bi-monthly phone calls to the Racing Commission, to check if the application status allowed it to be legally released to the public.
2. Mrs. Martin demanded to know why the Township Committee did not sue the State of New Jersey to get the application sooner. Since New Jersey public law 2011 c. 26, passed by a Democrat-controlled Legislature, grants full authority over OTW applications to the N.J. Racing Commission and the Attorney General, the Township Committee made the prudent decision that it was not going to waste your hard-earned tax dollars on a lawsuit that would have zero chance for success.
Failed Democratic policies, such as frivolous lawsuits, borrowing money for nonessential projects, and ignoring basic infrastructure, is why Sonya Martin and others were not returned to office more than a decade ago. Let’s keep Hillsborough smartly moving forward.
