Sept. 7 marked the beginning of National Suicide Prevention Week throughout the country. In 2014, suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., claiming more than 40,000 lives. Suicide rates among youth (age 15-24) have increased more than 200 percent in the last 50 years, and suicide is the second leading cause of death for this age group.
In New Jersey, the 2NDFLOOR youth helpline is available to youth 24/7, 365 days a year and is committed to the prevention of suicide. The helpline is accredited by the American Association of Suicidology, and staff is trained to handle calls and texts from youth in need.
Suicides may be prevented. Most suicidal teens desperately want to live — they are just unable to see alternatives to their problems. Most give definite warning signals of their suicidal intentions, but many are often unaware of the significance of these warnings or unsure what to do about them. Asking someone about suicide if they are having thoughts of suicide does not cause someone to become suicidal.
A suicidal person may:
Talk about suicide, death and/or having no reason to live;
Be preoccupied with death and dying;
Withdraw from friends and/or social activities;
Have a recent severe loss (especially a relationship) or threat of a significant loss; Experience drastic changes in behavior; Lose interest in hobbies, work or school; Give away prized possessions;
Have attempted suicide before;
Take unnecessary risks, be reckless and/or impulsive;
Lose interest in their personal appearance;
Increase their use of alcohol or drugs;
Express a sense of hopelessness;
Have a history of violence or hostility;
Be unwilling to “connect” with potential helpers.
There are ways to help someone who is experiencing suicidal thoughts. Be aware and learn the above warning signs. Get involved and show your interest and support by expressing your concern. Be nonjudgmental and remain calm.
The most important way to help is to take immediate action by getting help from agencies specializing in suicide prevention. In New Jersey, youth can call 2NDFLOOR’s helpline at 1-888-222-2228. All residents and adults can call the New Jersey Hopeline at 1-855-654- 6735. Both agencies are available 24/7, 365 days a year.
Please join the 2NDFLOOR youth helpline in supporting suicide-prevention efforts.
