Caseys start tennis season strong behind their depth

Although its lineup has been revamped, Red Bank Catholic (RBC) High School’s girls tennis team continues its winning ways, as the Caseys are off to a 5-0 start this fall.

Coach Lynn DiGioia noted that she has been getting contributions from all of her players. For example, in a 3-2 victory Sept. 18 over Shore Conference B North Division rival Wall High School, the Caseys won at second and third singles as well as first doubles. In another 3-2 win over Red Bank Regional High School — another divisional rival — Sept. 11, the second doubles tandem put RBC over the top.

A year ago, the Caseys posted a 20-3 mark, won the division and captured the NJSIAA South Jersey Non-Public A and overall Non- Public A crowns before falling to Newark Academy in the Tournament of Champions.

“Last year was tremendous, and we have a strong team again this year,” the coach said. “We’re off to a good start, but we don’t have one player who is playing in the same position as last year. The girls are still winning even though we’ve had a few bumps.”

At the top of the Caseys’ lineup is Alexis Fuda. The aggressive sophomore moves up after playing second doubles a year ago. Fuda’s strong forehand and consistent serve are her calling cards, as she takes on some of the best players in the Shore.

“It’s very difficult to make that big of a jump in just one year,” DiGioia said. “Alexis is holding her own and, at the same time, she’s gaining experience every time she steps on the court. That will make her a better player.”

Kate Mazza, a senior who went 22-1 at first doubles last season, is off to a 5-1 start in the second singles slot. Mazza has a strong all-around game, but her best attributes may be athleticism and quickness.

Scrappy Kayleigh Shannon holds down the third singles job for RBC. The senior’s determination and ability to keep balls in play and wear down opponents are the keys to her game. A pair of juniors, Izzy Krynycyi and lefthander Erin Mattone, are 6-1 at first doubles. Both girls are strong coming to the net, and they look to end points quickly. Mattone played second doubles a year ago, where she was 18-5-1.

At second doubles this season, RBC’s freshman duo of left-hander Sarah Dente and Jenna Ryan are 7-1. The pair’s lone loss came against Holmdel High School Sept. 20 in the Monmouth County Tournament finals.

Seniors Lucy Whaley and Gabriella Iannacone are also doubles players and will see time as the season progresses. Juniors Emily Bryson, Orla Cottell and Bella Murrer and sophomore Brianna Leon are also available for doubles duty. Another junior, Kerri Fell, provides depth at singles and can play doubles as well.

Following a match Sept. 21 at Long Branch High School, the Caseys were scheduled to visit St. John Vianney High School Sept. 23. On Sept. 25, RBC returns home to host Colts Neck High School. All three are divisional matches.
