To the editor:
Recently while waiting at the light at Triangle Road, I witnessed a near collision while the car ahead of me attempted to make a left turn onto Auten Road. The driver couldn’t see over the SUV making a left turn on the other side and just missed being hit by the oncoming car in the right lane.
Fortunately, he was one of the lucky drivers. Many more are not so lucky and each week there are countless near misses and, more often than not, accidents (both major ad minor). The sad thing is that many, if not all of these accidents, could easily be eliminated by simply upgrading the light with a left turn signal.
Today, with more and more drivers owning larger SUVs and pickup trucks it’s becoming harder and harder for drivers in smaller and medium sized cars to see over these vehicles. If they are in a hurry, or think they are safe and proceed because they don’t have the proper view, tragic events can occur.
In conclusion, based on my first hand experience of the dangers and accidents at this light, I feel this intersection of Auten and Triangle is the most dangerous in Hillsborough and simply doesn’t have to be. Therefore, the sooner the town can modify this light with a left turn signal, the safer we all will be.
