Many of the new teachers in the Hillsborough school district were introduced Monday night to the Board of Education.
A total of 77 teachers and long-term substitutes lined up by school assignment and were described in capsule summaries by the principal of their building.
“One of the most important decisions we make is who will be educating your children,” Superintendent Jorden Schiff said.
He said there were close to 3,000 applications for available jobs this school year. Among the group were a few Hillsborough High School alumni.
The high school had the most new hires, 24. Most had experience in other districts and many held master’s degrees or better. Teresa Hagood, a consumer science teacher, had experience in Hillsborough, Florida. Teacher Teresa Romano, returned to the same high school department she left 14 years ago to raise a family, said Principal Karen Bingert.
In the other buildings, there are 12 new faces at Auten Road Intermediate, 11 at the middle school and nine at Woods Road Elementary. Music teacher Ian Steege was noted for giving a beat bop demonstration, making vocal percussion sounds with his tongue and mouth, as his demonstration lesson for interviewers — an example of the scholarship, experience, lesson planning and writing samples that applicants must provide.
In the other buildings, there are three new faces at both Woodfern and Hillsborough Elementary schools, one each at Amsterdam and Sunnymead schools. There are some shared positions between schools.
