NORTH BRUNSWICK — Councilman Bob Davis has proposed naming Roosevelt Avenue “Veterans Way” with a secondary street sign “to honor all the veterans in North Brunswick as a tribute to serving their country.”
Davis, who was part of the 11th Special Forces Group Airborne during the Vietnam era, though he did not see combat, has always been a champion of veterans’ recognition. He helped implement a street naming program in town where streets have ancillary signs bearing the names of residents who have served in any war.
However, he said during the Sept. 21 council workshop meeting, that only eight or nine families are honored each year, so having a general Veterans Way would be more encompassing.
Since formally changing the street name would require changing residents’ addresses, he suggested the secondary sign instead, such as when Raider Road was named Purple Heart Way years ago.
“We had a numerous amount of purple hearts in North Brunswick but unfortunately they have passed away,” said Pete Clark, principal of North Brunswick Township High School, which is on Raider Road.
Mayor Francis “Mac” Womack said the idea is fitting because Veterans Park is on Roosevelt Avenue. The township marked the groundbreaking of renovations to the park on Sept. 21.
“I think we need to honor our veterans as much as possible,” Womack said.
More information about a possible ceremony to mark the renaming will be announced at a later date.
