Biondi run-walk replaces Sourlands Mountain race 
Sun., Oct. 11 — The 3rd annual Peter J. Biondi Run-Walk will honor the former leader. Registration and check-in begins at 7:45a.m. Races start at 8:30. Start and finish will be the Peter J. Biondi Municipal Building at 379 South Branch Road. The 5K out-and-back course will take place on paved surfaces. The course is mostly flat. Cost is $25 on the day of the race.
For 2015 the race has been converted to a traditional 5k run and family walk from the previous trail run in Sourlands Mountain Preserve. Start time for the race is 8:30 a.m.
Proceeds benefit the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program of Somerset County, in the name of Mr. Biondi, who served the area as Hillsborough mayor, Somerset County freeholder and state Assemblyman. He died in November 2011.
SHIP is a faith based, interfaith and community funded, assisted and supported, grassroots organization for women, children and men in desperate need of emergency housing and associated services. 
Library group sponsors Manville-wide yard sale 
Sat., Oct. 10 —The Friends of the Manville Library will sponsor its first town-wide yard sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to benefit the Manville Public Library. For a small fee, participants can hold their own yard sale at their residence or in the library parking lot on South 10th Avenue. Rain date Oct. 11. Maps for locations will be available at the library Saturday morning and locations around town.

Ladies auxiliary schedules two more fall flea markets 
Sat., Oct. 10 — A flea market is scheduled for the lot behind the Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Co. No. 2 at 375 Route 206. 9 a.m. start. No parking next to the firehouse or in driveway. Proceeds benefit the fire company.

Democrats gather to watch first presidential debate 
Tues., Oct. 13 — Hillsborough Democrats will watch the first Democratic presidential candidates debate at 7:30 p.m. at Pizza ’n Pasta, 930 South Main St., Manville (just north of the Central NJ Airport).
Varieties of pizza, as well as soda, will be served in a private room with a large-screen TV. $15 per person is asked. A cash bar will be available.

Woman’s Club to hear psychic talk about ghosts 
Tues., Oct. 13 — Psychic Jane Doherty will speak about ghosts in the Somerset County area at the meeting of the Woman’s Club of Hillsborough at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Municipal Building at 379 South Branch Road.

St. Mary’s Catholic Church holds regular Slavic dinner 
Wed., Oct. 14 — St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church holds its monthly dinner, 4 to 7 p.m., in the St. Mary Parish Center, 1900 Brooks Blvd. $13 for adults (ages 9 and up) and $5 for children (8 and younger). All-you-can-eat pirohi, stuffed cabbage, kielbasa and sauerkraut, mashed potatoes. A surprise entrée will be prepared by St. Mary’s chef John Pagano. Orders to go available. Manville auxiliary to hold bingo night , basket auction 
Fri., Oct. 16 — The Manville North End Volunteer Fire Company No. 3 and Ladies Auxiliary will hold their annual basket bingo the firehouse on North 8th Avenue and Louis Street, Manville. South Branch church adds dinner date to its calendar 
Sat., Oct. 17 — A chicken francaise/marsala dinner and bake sale will be held at the South Branch Reformed Church, 870 River Road, from 4:30-7 pm. $14 for adults $14, $6 for children 6-12 and children 5 and under eat free. School group to collect used clothing, linens, shoes 
Sat., Oct. 17 — The Hillsborough Elementary School Home-School Association will hold a fall clothing drive, 7 to 11 a.m., in the parking lot of the school at Amwell Road and Route 206. Men, women’s and children’s clothing and accessories like belts, hats, ties, shoes and handbags, soft household items like bedding, curtains, towels and stuffed animals.

Annual sale of used books, DVDs, CDs benefits library 
Oct. 17 and 18 — The Friends of the Library annual used book and media sale will be held at the Hillsborough Municipal Building on South Branch Road on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The selection includes recent used books for adults, children and teens, as well as electronic media. The collection encompasses both fiction and non-fiction. There will be DVDs of movies and TV series for adults and children as well as music CDs, books on CD and games. All proceeds support the Hillsborough Library. Greek Catholic lodge will sponsor Living Well fair 
Sun., Oct. 18 — A free “Living Well Health Fair,” sponsored by the Greek Catholic Union Lodge 254 will take place from noon to 3:30 p.m. at the St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church Parish Center, 1900 Brooks Blvd. More than 20 booths will present a variety of healthful living assistance. Including physicians from Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center, Somerset, Steeplechase Cancer Center, nutritional guidance with a certified nutritionist cooking and creating nutritional drinks and a reflexologist. Garden Club will hear horticulture chairwoman 
Thurs., Oct. 22 — The Neshanic Garden Club will hold its regular monthly meeting at 9:45 a.m. at the Station House on Olive Street in Neshanic Station. At 11 a.m. Joan Lippi, the National Garden Club student judge and GCNJ Horticulture Chair for the 2015-2016 GCNJ Flower Show, will provide a workshop/overview of horticulture for the club’s October flower show, “Ghosts of the Sourlands.“
A workshop following the meeting will craft a pumpkin decorated with succulents, with components provided. Lug a mug to the light luncheon at noon.

Master gardeners will show how to harvest rainwater 
Sat., Oct. 24 — The Rutgers Master Gardeners of Somerset County offers a workshop on stormwater management, including the way to control run-off, harvest rainwater and build, paint and install a rain barrel.
The workshop will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the Ted Blum 4-H Center at 310 Milltown Road, Bridgewater. Cost of the program is $50 if you want to make a rain barrel, or $5 to attend the presentation. There will be a limit of 12 rain barrels, so registration by Friday, Oct. 16, is necessary. No walk-ins will be allowed.

Town sponsors Halloween party with haunted house 
Thurs., Oct. 29 — Kids can take a hayride to a pumpkin patch and walk through a haunted house at township recreation department event. 4:30-6:30 p.m. in municipal building. Woods Road auxiliary organizes vendor/craft fair 

Continuing events 
Community theater — Somerset Valley Players present “The Uninvited,” Dorothy Macardle’s ghost story set in England, directed by Tim Kelly, on weekends from Oct. 23 to Nov. 8 at the theater at 689 Amwell Road (Route 514). Shows are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Farm market: Duke Farms, off Route 206 in the northern part of the township, will again hold its “Farm to Table” Market through November. Several farmers have partnered with Duke Farms to present an array of local products. As the season progresses, they hope to add farmers to the market. Open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
VFW meetings: Monthly meetings of Hillsborough VFW Post 8371 are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the county nutrition center, 339 South Branch Road. All veterans with foreign service are welcome. For information about activities, contact Ron Miller at 908-369-5195.
Coping with addiction — Parents of Addicted Children helps parents understand and cope with drug problems they face with children. Meets first and third Monday of month, 6:30-7:30 p.m., at Neshanic Reformed Church, 715 Amwell Road.
Alzheimer’s support group — The Alzheimer’s Association has a support group in Hillsborough. Family members and caregivers come together to share information and support in a safe, confidential atmosphere.
Meetings are the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Mary, Mother of God Church at 157 So. Triangle Road. Call 908-431-1300 if attending.
Mothers of Preschoolers — MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) meets from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Fridays at the Fellowship Bible Church building, 109 New Amwell Road. The group says it meets to “laugh, cry and embrace the journey of motherhood.” Sponsored by Crossroads Community Church, it hears speakers, has a craft or project and lots of conversation and refreshment.
