CRANBURY: The Elms residents celebrate Oktoberfest

By Jennifer Kohlhepp, Managing Editor
At 100 years old, she can still play a mean game of pong.
Centenarian Helen Morrison wore an alpine-style hat she decorated for Oktoberfest while she tossed ping-pong balls into cups. She happily went for a sip of beer after she successfully bounced five balls into the containers on the table.
The games, beer, soft pretzels, chocolate cake and music at The Elms of Cranbury last Friday were put together by employees of McCann Torre Lazur, a healthcare communications firm in Parsippany.
The firm’s employees like to give back to the community, and organizing the Oktoberfest celebration for the assisted living and rehabilitation facility is just one way they use their resources and time to do so.
“We like to put smiles on peoples’ faces and show that we’re about doing something and not just about making money,” the firm’s Lauren Lewis said.
Karl Zeigler and the residents around him couldn’t help but smile after he knocked down a tower of beer cans in another game at the celebration.
“Not everyone comes in and does something like this,” Audrey Zborowski, activities director at The Elms, said.
One of her goals is to bring the outside world into the assisted living facility.
“I do everything I can to try to transform their lives,” Ms. Zborowski said.
Residents Colette Brennan, Norma DiPano and Irene Kish couldn’t have been happier enjoying each other’s company, the soft pretzels and beer.
