Borough needs tougher speed control

Kathy Fedorko, of Hopewell Borough
I have great respect for Mayor Paul Anzano and all of the other people, who generously volunteer their time, expertise and energy serving the citizens of Hopewell Borough.
They, along with the employees of Hopewell Borough, work to make our town beautiful, active and safe.
For the last few years, traffic problems have been a key issue in the borough. A recent article in the Hopewell Valley News highlighted the problem of noisy quarry dump trucks “rolling down roads like Princeton Avenue and Broad Street.”
The same article notes Borough Council members pointing out “important steps already have been taken, like enforcing recently reduced speed limits in town.”
Hopewell Borough does have automatic speed monitors at the east and west ends of town, which, no doubt, help remind some drivers to slow down. We also occasionally have Hopewell Township officers patrolling the town, helping to catch speeders and those who drive through crosswalks with pedestrians in them.
We need tougher methods of speed control, however, to make Hopewell Borough safer.
The best way to discourage drivers from speeding through Hopewell Borough, such as those driving quarry dump trucks, is to have 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. police coverage every day at all four entrances to town for a month or two. My guess is that after that time most drivers will not speed through town as they do now.
Drivers go 25 miles per hour through the main streets of Allentown, New Jersey, and on West Delaware Avenue in Pennington, New Jersey, because these streets were diligently patrolled for a consistent period of time. When you drove over the speed limit in Allentown or Pennington, you got a ticket.
Thank you to all Hopewell Borough and Hopewell Township drivers who obey the speed limit when they drive through the borough. To those who don’t, I encourage you to obey the 30- and 25-mile-per-hour speed limits.
We are your friends, your children’s friends, your colleagues and your fellow Hopewell Valley citizens. Help keep us and our town safe by driving the speed limit.
