Scholar Athlete swims, tutors, studies microbiology

NORTH BRUNSWICK — Two more deserving students were honored with the North Brunswick Scholar/Athlete/Artist award at the Oct. 5 council meeting.

Megan Gilmore is a seventh grade student at Linwood Middle School. She is on the honor roll and takes advanced math and language arts.

Megan has been a member of the North Brunswick Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Services’ Rapids swim team for the past three years. At the 2015B League Championship, she earned second place in the 200-yard medley relay, third place in the 50-yard breaststroke, fifth place in the 100-yard individual medley and fifth place in the 50-yard freestyle. She is also a member of the Raritan Valley YMCA Riptide Swim Team, where she trains six days a week.

Megan was a Daisy and a Brownie, and was part of the Oak Spring Girl Scout camp for seven years. While at camp this summer, she completed a 25-mile bike ride and a four-mile canoe trip.

Julian Maceren is a senior at North Brunswick Township High School where he is on the honor roll.

Julian is a member of the high school’s cross-country team; he has been running since sixth grade.

He has been swimming with the Rapids since he was 10, participated in the Riptide Spring Fling conditioning program for two seasons and is currently a varsity swimmer at his school.

Julian is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honors Society, the Science League and Key Club.

Julian also analyzes DNA sequences for a program with the Waksman Institute of Microbiology, and has participated in the SMART program where he grew cultures of bacteria, studied them and conducted experiments in a lab.

Julian is also the lieutenant governor for Key Club, overseeing eight Key Clubs in the region. He is also the co-leader of the Peer Tutoring Program at the nigh school. He has developed a website to compile notes and study guides to help students in school, and received his basic tutoring license so that he can help teach students at Linwood Middle School.
