Metuchen home to donation center

METUCHEN — The borough recently became a little greener, when it welcomed a GreenDrop donation center.

Located at 359 Amboy Ave., the center provides residents with a novel way to support charities while getting rid of unwanted items.

Donors simply gather their unwanted lightly used clothing, electronics and household goods, and pull up to the clean, brightly lit and safe donation center where they are greeted by a friendly, uniformed attendant who will unload their donations and provide a tax-deductible receipt, according to GreenDrop representatives.

Once their items are collected, donors may choose the GreenDrop partner charity to which they would like to direct their giving — Military Order of the Purple Heart or the National Federation of the Blind.

GreenDrop charitable donation centers are often found at renovated gas stations and convenience stores, where donated goods can be properly stored and protected from the elements.

Items collected by GreenDrop are converted to cash so that each of the benefiting charities can further their programs and related initiatives with proper funding. In 2014, GreenDrop’s efforts raised a total of $2.5 million for participating charities, according to company representatives.

The Metuchen donation center is open 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Friday, Saturday from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
