Students attend safe driving summit

EDISON — Two high school students from the township recently traveled to an event in Washington, D.C., to help make their community safer.

Stephanie Zhang and Rohit Iyer, national officers of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), are serving as a Youth Leadership Team for the National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS).

Along with their adviser, Patricia Di- Gioia-Laird, Stephanie and Rohit traveled to the nation’s capital from Oct. 17-20 to attend the NOYS Teen Safe Driving Summit, where they learned about safety issues including teen distracted driving, seat belt usage, speeding, impaired driving and auto safety.

The students plan to use the information to serve their community of Middlesex County, which is home to the largest number of teen drivers in the state.

The real will occur when the Youth Leadership Teams from 22 states participate in the Seat Belts Save Challenge in their schools, including the Safest Summer Ever Rally in spring 2016, and other events throughout the year. The groups will submit monthly reports to NOYS on their activities.

NOYS is a coalition of nonprofit and for-profit youth-serving organizations and government agencies working together toward the common goal of addressing health and safety issues that affect youth in the United States.
