Library association appreciates support

On behalf of the Allentown Public Library Association, I would like to thank the Examiner for the article about the steeple project (“Allentown Library Steeple Restored with Care,” Oct. 29).

Thank you for capturing the special relationship contractor Jason Harris and his family have with the library as he undertook a significant renovation project.

We would like to note this was a costly project — steeples are complicated! We are very grateful to the Monmouth County Historical Commission for awarding a grant for the project. Over the last 20 years of restoration and renovation of this 19th century building, the commission has encouraged us to apply for grants for work that meet the grant guidelines for “preserving Monmouth County’s rich and diverse built environment.”

Also special to note is that the association had saved money and had the matching funds available for the project, and then received a most unexpected gift. Tom Kilgore, a long-time friend to and volunteer for the library, left a percentage of his estate to the Allentown Public Library. As it turned out, it was the precise amount needed for this steeple project.

We now turn our attention to other projects that need to be done. Maintaining a big building is a constant challenge!

The Allentown Public Library serves all of western Monmouth County with exemplary library services. It also is a central personality that enhances the character of historic Main Street, Allentown. Thank you to the commission and to all those who so generously support this unique public library.
