OLD BRIDGE — The annual Cops for Kids program that brings cheer to township children in need has been running for almost two decades.
“Nineteen years ago, a bunch of cops began a program to create fun events for township children in need,” said Old Bridge Police Lt. Joseph Mandola, program coordinator for the nonprofit organization.
The holiday party will take place on Dec. 11 this year as a result of the dedication of members of the Old Bridge Police Department and supporters in the community.
For many years, the program sponsored a day at a ball game during the summer and a Christmas party in the winter, but a shortage of funds has made it necessary to cut back.
“Due to decreased funds we have to stop the ball game, but we still hold the Christmas party,” said Mandola.
A band of Old Bridge police officers will volunteer their time on Dec. 11 at the Old Bridge Civic Center by playing Santa’s helpers to brighten the holiday for 75 to 85 kids in the community this Christmas season.
Mandola said the smiles on the children’s faces make the annual holiday party worthwhile.
“We’re a bunch of cops, so it is also a place where we can build relationships with the kids in the township,” he said. “Some of the cops will be in uniform letting the children know that they do not have to fear cops, we are the ones to come to when there is trouble.”
Mandola said over the years the officers who participate have brought smiles to many children. One child in particular stands out, who is now 19 years old.
“He came to the parties since he was one year old … now he has come back and volunteers his time with us,” he said.
The party includes a hot buffet style meal.
Mandola said over the years many local businesses, including banks, pizzerias, restaurants and catering halls have made donations, whether monetary or trays of food, to make the event happen.
He said the help of businesses and residents is being sought to ensure that underprivileged kids in Old Bridge have a gift or two to open on Christmas morning. Cops for Kids is currently accepting gift cards and monetary donations.
Donations should be made payable to Cops for Kids, 1 Old Bridge Plaza, Old Bridge, NJ 08857 Attn: Lt. J. Mandola. Donations can also be dropped off Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at police headquarters, 1 Old Bridge Plaza.
