HILLSBOROUGH: Students hoop it up, raise $19,000 to fight heart disease

Students raised $19,428.81 for the American Heart Association through basketball-related games at this year’s Hoops for Heart event at Auten Road Intermediate School.
Proceeds will fund research and educational programs to increase awareness and prevention of heart disease and stroke.
The ARIS Health and Physical Education teachers have been supporting the American Heart Association by running the Hoops for heart event ever since the school opened.
The department staff teaches students of the importance to advocate for a cause they believe it. Since most of the kids have expressed knowing a family member or friend who has suffered from one or both of these illnesses, thecause seems to be the perfect choice.
The team is ecstatic about the success of the event and thanks the students for their dedication to fund-raising efforts, as well as families for helping to make the positive experience.
Students played hoop games like “around the world,” “knock out” and four-on-four games.
“Our students had a lot of fun during the week-long fitness activities and enjoyed learning about the importance of physical activity in creating a healthy lifestyle as well as learning how they can play a role in helping to save people’s lives,” said Sylvia Scozzari, a physical education teacher and the Hoops for Heart coordinator.
