SEA BRIGHT — A small indication that the borough is moving forward from superstorm Sandy may be the recent approval to purchase a basketball hoop that would be stationed in the municipal parking lot.
Borough officials said prior to the storm in 2012, a basketball hoop had been located in the municipal parking lot and served as a place for children as well as adults to come together to play a fun pick-up game. The basket was destroyed by the storm.
“It’s temporary,” said Councilman Charles Rooney III of the new hoop. “It will be taken out during the beach season.”
Rooney said the hoop will be located in an area near the bathrooms away from vehicles in the lot. He said he and Police Chief John Sorrentino surveyed the parking lot to find the best and safest location for the hoop.
Mayor Dina Long said a plus for the borough is the funds for the hoop are being donated by the Andy/Rooney Sea Bright Ocean Mile Swim that was held in July.
Rooney, who organized the swim, said the group wanted to do something nice for Sea Bright.
The Borough Council voted to approve the purchase of the basketball hoop at a meeting on Nov. 16.
