Two men injured in collision

JACKSON – Two men were taken to an area hospital after their vehicles were involved in a head-on collision in Jackson.

Police said the accident occurred just after 6 p.m. Nov. 28 when a 2002 Mercedes Benz traveling east on West Veterans Highway collided with a 2004 Saturn traveling west.

Jackson Police Capt. Steven Laskiewicz said the accident occurred when the Mercedes Benz crossed the center line and veered into oncoming traffic just east of the intersection of West Veterans Highway and Thompson Bridge Road. The vehicle was being driven by Joseph Santangelo, 59, of Howell.

The Mercedes Benz struck the Saturn that was being driven by Joseph Zippo, 34, of Jackson.

Both drivers were extricated from their vehicle by members of Jackson Volunteer Fire Company No. 1. Members of the Jackson First Aid Squad and MONOC paramedics also responded to the accident.

Laskiewicz said Santangelo and Zippo were transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Zippo was airlifted to the hospital. Both men sustained what police described as non-life-threatening injuries, but with broken bones, as a result of the accident.

An investigation of the accident is being conducted by Sgt. Rich Bosley and officers Kevin Chesney and Joe Candido. Anyone who witnessed the accident or has information regarding the matter is asked to contact police at 732-928-1111.
