– Lions’ strawberry festival set for June 12

The annual Oceanport Lions Club Strawberry Festival will take place from 6-9 p.m. June 12 at Maple Place School, 2 Maple Place, Oceanport. All proceeds will be used to benefit the community.

Wolf Hill students will present a variety show at the family-friendly festival. Children can enjoy rock climbing under the guidance of Coach Donny Brockelbank, an Animal Kingdom Bounce House, face painting and free games and popcorn.

Ice cream, root-beer floats, pizza, hot dogs and soda along with strawberry shortcake will be available.

There will be chances to win Visa gift cards ranging from $100-$1,000. $5 raffle tickets can also be bought in advance or at the event. Winners do not need to be present.

Contenders at this year’s Water Challenge competition in the dunk tank will include Oceanport Councilman Joe Irace, who will challenge the Water Warriors. This year’s Water Warriors include Wolf Hill Principal Melanie Lipinski, Maple Place Principal Matt Howell and School Business Administrator Dennis Kotch.

Dr. Craig Sprung will be on the court attempting 30 three-point basketball shots. Guests can sponsor each shot he makes from 25 cents per shot to pledges ranging from $1-$10. Pledges can be made in advance at www.oceanportlionsclub.com/2015/04/568/.

Monmouth County Vocation School District Board of Education member Clem Sommers will be honored for his 37 years of service and his role in the success of the district.

Bring old eyeglasses to donate. A prize will be awarded to whoever brings in the most pairs.

– Historical association plans events

A series of events highlighting various periods of American history is on tap at the Monmouth County Historical Association, Freehold, and associated locations throughout June, Director Evelyn C. Murphy announced.

“We are fortunate to have many talented people associated with the history of not only Monmouth County, but New Jersey,” Murphy said, “and with school classes over for students and families taking vacations, June is the perfect time to highlight the exhibits and events we have in store for our visitors.”

The opening of the museum’s newest exhibit, “Spirituals to Soul: African American Musical Heritage in Monmouth,” highlighting a century of African American musical talent in Monmouth County from 1880-1980, will take place on June 18 at the museum in Freehold and will be on display until the end of November.

“A Beautiful Childhood: Portraits from the Permanent Collection” will feature portraits of children of all ages during the 18th and 19th centuries and will be open from June through the end of the year. Open hours for the exhibits are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Historically Speaking Lecture Series continues on June 24 at the Junior League of Monmouth County, 55 Center St., Rumson, when local author Roberta H. Van Anda will speak about her recently published book, “Legendary Locals of Rumson,” the newest addition to Arcadia Publishing Company’s imprint Legendary Locals series about famous personalities of Rumson. That event is also offered at no charge.

The 40th annual Garden Party will take place on June 28 at 5 p.m. Immediate past-president Claire Knopf will be honored for her commitment to the education and preservation of history. For tickets and information, interested persons may contact the museum at 732-462-1466, ext. 19.

– The Fabulous Fakes will present their 12th annual production, “Everything Old Is New Again,” on June 11, 12 and 14 at the Shadow Lake Village clubhouse at 1 Loch Arbor Way, Red Bank.
