Allentown hit the cross bar twice on strong headers by Danny Bailey and Thomas Koontz, but could not get on the board. Wall scored the second goal of the match to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. Allentown came out strong in the second half, only to see Wall once again score quickly to take a 3-0 lead. The Red Storm continued to play hard as the game became very physical. A Wall player took a red card, and Allentown came on strong. Danny Bailey put a penalty kick into the back of the net for Allentown to get them on the board. A few minutes later Dan Bailey lofted a direct kick on net and Josh Howell drove to the net and headed the ball into the goal past Wall’s keeper. With the score now 3-2, Allentown began to really press the action. Wall took a second red card and numerous yellows as the game began to get very physical. With only seconds to go in the game, an Allentown player was taken down in the box and Danny Bailey put his second PK of the game into the back of the net to knot the game at 3-all. This is how the game ended as Allentown’s perseverance paid off. Allentown’s defenders Danny Santos, Jarrett Kunze, Kevin Bux and Adam Kwietniak playing strong games against a powerful Wall offensive front. The Red Storm will be back in action this weekend in the East Windsor tournament on Saturday.
Despite the heavy overnight rainfall that continued into Sunday morning, UFA40 managed to play their scheduled game against Little Silver at Thompson Park in Middletown. With both UFA40 first choice goalkeepers out with injuries, Didier Mory volunteered to put on the keeper’s shirt and gloves and go between the posts for what turned out to be a very evenly matched contest against the Little Silver team. For the first 45 minutes, however, he did not have a lot to do, as the UFA defense, anchored by Chuck Darrell and Alan Nicholls, kept all threats to a minimum. At the other end, locals Amaro Pereira and Dan Caruso kept the pressure on, and eventually UFA took the lead with a fine goal from Caruso, a lob over the goalkeeper’s head. This was quickly followed by another goal, this time from Steve Sedon, giving UFA a 2-0 lead going into the halftime break. The second half resumed with the home side going all out to try and get a goal back. The defense held firm, and Mory pulled off some fine saves to preserve the win, and also keep his job as starting keeper for next game at home to Lakewood.

The Allentown Charge U10 girls soccer team traveled north to Old Bridge to take on the Staten Island United Metros. The Charge got off to a quick start with Hannah Murphy being taken down in the penalty box in the first minute of play. A penalty kick was awarded and Jillian Frein began a very successful campaign with a shot placed to the left corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead. The Charge were not done, as the midfielders, led by Jamie Perritt, Kelly Rocklein, and Erin Primich, supported the offense, led by Taylor Frein, Krysta Plummer, Hannah Murphy, and Kim Wilson. Jillian Frein knotted her second goal of the day at the 17-minute mark in the contest.
At halftime, Shannon Abbott came out of goal to team up with Bianca Covitz on defense to keep the Metros from scoring opportunities. Erin Drennan took over in goal. Although she did not receive a lot of action, she made a terrific save late in the match to keep the Metros off the board. Jillian Frein recorded her first hat trick of the season at the 34-minute mark, with an assist from Hannah Murphy. Krysta Plummer finished off the scoring with a perfectly placed ball into the right corner of the Metros net. The Charge finished with a 4-0 win. The Allentown Attack U10 boys travel soccer team played two games this past weekend. Friday night the Attack played the Twin County Pythons in a hard-fought, exciting match. The Attack pressed the action throughout, hitting the post twice and keeping the Pythons goalie very busy during the first half of action. The Pythons got on the board first as they put a direct kick in the upper corner just out of the reach of Allentown’s leaping goalie, Nathaniel Marquez. The entire second half saw Allentown pressing the action, but they just could not put a ball in the net. Allentown pushed everyone up with seconds to play as they took a corner kick. Russell Nicholson placed the corner directly in front of the net, and on the ensuing scramble, Cameron Mory drove home the game-tying goal for the Attack with just seconds to spare. It was a well-earned tie for the Attack as they never gave up in a very exciting contest. The back line of Ryan Darrell, Cameron Mory, Jake Calvitti, Evan Byrnes and Patrick Dawes played a strong defensive game for the Attack, limiting the Pythons to a handful of offensive opportunities.
The Attack dodged the rain on Saturday and played an afternoon match at home against the TRSA Thunder. The game was scoreless until mid-way through the first half as neither team could get on the board. Ryan Darrell pressed up from his center fullback position and drove home the first score of the game for the Attack on a long, hard shot from outside the 18. The Attack built on this momentum and relentlessly pressed the action. Steven Hensley got the second goal for the Attack and the flood gates opened. Alexander Valentino scored for the Attack as he deftly handled a cross and put it in the back of the net. Russell Nicholson scored two quick goals for the Attack to put the game well out of reach. Alec Scarano’s scrappiness paid off as he completed the scoring for Allentown. Patrick McCarthy and Justin Patrylow had strong games for the Attack. This weekend the Attack will play in the East Windsor tournament.
The Allentown-MASA Grizzlies U11 boys soccer team traveled to Lakehurst on Sunday to face the Lakehurst-Manchester Cheetahs. The game started off end-to-end, with both teams pressing the defenses. Then The Grizzlies struck first as Nick Howell hammered home a shot after a long scuffle in the Cheetahs’ box. The Cheetahs came right back and capitalized on a defensive lapse, as their striker dribbled past three defenders for the equalizer on a shot at close range that left Grizzlies goalie Bob Millar with no chance. Then Grizzlies midfielders Nick Caruso, Scott Nicholson, and Howell took control, and worked the ball into the Cheetahs half to forwards John Lansing, Kyle Alston, and Ernie Tessein. Lansing took a lead pass down the left wing and nailed a shot to regain the lead. He score two more times, with the hat trick goal coming on a picture-perfect redirection header to the nearpost corner. Grizzlies defenders Danny Lamb and Luke Olexsak rotated to the front line, while Zack Caruso, Matt Molnar, and Kyle Golla stayed back to keep the defense in order. Matt Fleischacker collected a rebound on the right of the Cheetahs’ goal and returned a cross to a wide-open Scott Nicholson at the penalty spot, who found the net for another Grizzlies goal. On the next drive, Fleischacker took the shot himself and scored. The Grizzlies capped the scoring on a long shot from outside the box by Ernie Tessein. The Grizzlies face the Sayreville Rolling Thunder on Sunday at 1:30 in a highly anticipated rematch at Mark Harbourt
