Well, it is that time of year again: spring is in the air, and we are all counting down the days until summer break. But first come the proms, and for some, graduation.
These are important milestones in a young person’s life, and the season is often marked with parties, outings and other celebrations. During this time, teens may feel more pressure to celebrate by partying with illicit drugs, alcohol, or even prescription drugs. Prevention First wants to remind you to make this a safe time for your children and our communities.
Young people are bombarded with messages about alcohol every day. Unfortunately, many of these messages do not include the real facts. From 2008 to 2009, the percent of teens who say their “friends usually get high at parties” increased from 69 percent to 75 percent, according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America. It’s up to parents, teachers and the local community to help teens celebrate these occasions in a fun and safe manner.
By following a few simple tips, parents can help keep their teens safe during prom and graduation celebrations:
• Set clear rules about no drug and alcohol use, establish consequences, and reinforce expectations.
• Provide safe and fun alternatives such as chaperoned alcohol and drug-free after-prom and graduation parties.
• Be aware and ask questions; know who they will be with, where they will be, and at what times.
• Be a good role model.
At this time of year, parents need to be aware of what their teens are doing and talk to them about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, the consequences of using and the risks to their future. Bad choices, like using drugs or alcohol, could change their lives forever. The messages parents send to their children are crucial.
