JACKSON – Municipal officials have awarded a contract to a Union County firm for the construction of a splash park water amenity at the Jackson Justice Complex, West Veterans Highway.
At its Aug. 11 meeting, the members of the Township Council voted unanimously to award a contract in the amount of $134,546 to Picerno Giordano Construction, Kenilworth.
Officials said four bids were received for the project. The highest bid was $237,233.
In 2014, Jackson officials received notification from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Development Block Grant program that approximately $150,000 in federal grant money had been awarded to the splash park project.
Business Administrator Helene Schlegel said work on the splash park is expected to begin in September. The water amenity will have a sports theme and will be accessible to all individuals.
Officials have said the splash park will not be monitored by a lifeguard. The water will only run when an individual enters the facility and his presence is detected by motion activated bollards.
Rules for the splash park are being developed by municipal officials.
In other council news, officials introduced an ordinance that will allow the sale of unneeded public land. The township will sell a 975-square-foot parcel off Connecticut Concourse West.
The sale will be completed through a bidding process for adjacent property owners and the minimum bid for the property is $6,700. Officials have the right to reject bids from either party. The highest bidder will receive the land and merge it with his existing property.
