Area residents involved in Freehold Twp. crash

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP — A township resident died after succumbing to internal injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle accident on Route 9 on March 5.

The crash, involving four vehicles, occurred at 11:18 a.m. on Route 9 south near the intersection of Elton-Adelphia Road, according to Freehold Township police Detective Sgt. Jerry Kiwit.

Foreman Barkalow, 73, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at 11:52 a.m., according to Kiwit, who said an autopsy determined that he died of internal injuries associated with the crash.

Kiwit said Barkalow was driving a 1988 Ford station wagon southbound on Route 9 and for a reason that has not been determined, left his lane of travel and crossed the grass median and entered the northbound lanes of the highway.

Barkalow’s vehicle was struck by a 2008 Nissan being driven by Debbie Wieczorkiewicz, 46, of Jackson, according to police.

Wieczorkiewicz’s vehicle was then struck by a 2010 Honda being driven by Janet Battaglia, 58, of Howell.

Battaglia’s vehicle was then stuck by a 2012 Mazda being driven by Antonio Estanqueiro, 55, of Howell.

According to Kiwit, Wieczorkiewicz was transported to CentraState Medical Center, West Main Street, for treatment of an arm injury.

Battaglia was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, for chest trauma.

Estanqueiro was transported to CentraState Medical Center with bruises and injuries sustained in the accident.

Freehold Township Police Officer James McNamara is the investigating officer. Responding to the scene were Freehold Township police, the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team, the East Freehold Fire Co. and the Freehold First Aid and Emergency Squad.
