NASCAR Featherlite Modified tour at WTS Sunday

WALL TOWNSHIP — The NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series will rumble to life for its inaugural race at Wall Township Speedway on Sunday.

The racing program, which will include a 50-lapper for Wall’s Busch Beer Modifieds and a 50-lapper for the Pro Stocks in addition to the Featherlite Modified 150-lapper, will begin promptly at 1 p.m. In fact, the weekend will be a big one with NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series action also slated for Saturday night at 6 p.m.

On Sunday, all the top drivers in the NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series are expected to be on hand. Point leader Todd Szegedy of Ridgefield, Conn. will be looking for yet another victory, while local favorite John Blewett III, Howell, will continue to chase him both on the track and in the point standings. Chuck Hossfeld of Ransomville, N.Y., Rick Fuller of Auburn, Mass., Howell’s Jamie Tomaino, Nevin George of Kunkletown, Pa., Donny Lia of Merrick, N.Y., Eddie Flemke of Southington, Conn., Jerry Marquis of Broad Brook, Conn., Ted Christopher, Plainville, Conn., Jan Leaty of Williamson, N.Y., and Tony Hirschman of Northampton, Pa., are just some of the Featherlite Series stars expected to compete for the first-ever Wall Modified Series win.

Although Wall Township Speedway offers NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series auto racing every Saturday night through the end of October, this final weekend of June will be gigantic.

Facility improvements continue

Speedway operations manager Sergio Benitez announced today that sections of the wooden rails around the third-mile high-banked paved are going to be replaced with galvanized metal highway rails from corner to corner, while the straight-aways will remain the existing wooden rails.

He said that the new rails could be in place before this weekend.

"There is no hurry to get this done, but we have the work force that can do it now and we have the materials needed now," Benitez said, "so we are moving ahead with the project.

"The track is fine the way it is now. Sgt. Eric Mutter and the State Police Racing Unit approved the license for the track after an annual inspection in the beginning of the year. This is just another of the planned improvements for the facility, and this is a good time to do it."
