STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER ERIC SUCAR Charlie Volker proved he can do more than run over tacklers at the Monmouth County Track and Field Championships.
The Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School star running back added the county 100-meter dash championship to his football exploits.
Volker overpowered the 100 dash finals, winning the century championship in 10.8 seconds. He also showed some endurance in finishing third in the 200 (22.08).
The county championships were held May 6 and 8 at Holmdel High School.
Volker, who led the Bulldogs to back-toback NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II championships the last two falls, will continue his football career at Princeton University. But before then, his focus will be on how fast he can run on the track.
Shore Regional High School’s Kevin Mazzella backed up his fine indoor season by upsetting Christian Brothers Academy’s Drake Anzano and Blaise Ferro in the 800- meter run. Mazzella’s 1:55.14 held off Drake (1:55.79) and Ferro (1:56.53).
During the undercover season, Mazzella won the Group I state championship.
Ferro (4:21.47) and Drake (4:24.55) ran first and second in the 1,600, CBA captured the boys team championship with 126.75 points.
Andrew Liskowitz won the shot put (59- 10) and discus (165-1) titles for the Colts.
Red Bank Regional High School’s Sean Patterson captured the difficult 400 intermediate hurdles in a time of 54.54. A tremendous competition was held in the girls shot put circle with Red Bank Regional’s Sarena Dixon, Red Bank Catholic High School’s Fidele Jules and Ocean Township High School’s Michelle Mazza all reaching personal bests and finishing within 4½ inches of each other.
It was Dixon who got the win with a throw of 43-6½, just half-an-inch ahead of Jules (43-6). Mazza was next at 43-2.
St. John Vianney High School’s Monica Heil ran to gold in the girls 400 in 56.72.
Freehold Township High School won the girls title with 68 points. Red Bank Catholic was the top area finisher in fourth (44).
