Committeeman Wall’s comment was inappropriate (An open letter to the Holmdel Township Committee)

Committeeman Wall’s comment was inappropriate
(An open letter to the Holmdel Township Committee)

On Aug. 15, the Independent published my comments on the Nike housing issue under "Your Turn." The wonderful thing about our country is the freedom we have to express one’s opinion.

I received a call from Committeeman Terence Wall on the evening of Aug. 15 in response to my article. I was interested in listening to Wall’s point of view, but one of his comments was of great concern to me and, I believe, inappropriate. Therefore, I am writing to the Township Committee about this concern and would like this letter read into the minutes of the township meeting.

First, let me reiterate that Wall has every right to respond to me about my article. However, his approach was very aggressive and condescending on the phone. I listened and responded to questions and comments. One comment from Wall’s was "…Well, no one reads these articles anyway." I certainly disagree with that statement, as I have gotten many favorable comments from the community. But just in case you missed the article, I am enclosing a copy.

The conversation continued for a few more minutes and when my point of view couldn’t be swayed, Wall commented "Well, Mrs. Liebenow, what if the township changed the zoning on your family’s 53-acre farm property…" I immediately told him, "That statement is inappropriate, and I am terminating this conversation," and hung up.

This sounded like and was taken as a threat. The fact that Wall is on the Township Committee and has power in this matter makes his comment totally inappropriate. Our town representatives should not intimidate or threaten residents when their point of view is challenged. My mother-in-law’s property is under contract, and there are applications pending with the town. How do we know this representative would not use his influence after making this comment? Therefore, I felt it very important this letter be sent to the Township Committee. I will wait for your reply to this matter.

Although I feel intimidated by Mr. Wall’s comment, it is important to me to stand up for my right to express my opinion, as well as respect others who take a different point of view. I do not however, respect this approach by an elected township official.
