FREEHOLD — Six months after advertising for candidates for the new position of a civilian police director, Freehold Borough officials have not announced a decision regarding the position.
As of July 22, Business Administrator Joseph Bellina did not have any information about the potential hiring of a police director. He said the matter is “under further review.”
An ordinance adopted in 2014 gives the Borough Council the power to hire a civilian police director who will not be a uniformed officer, will not carry a weapon and will not respond to calls for assistance.
An advertisement placed on the New Jersey State League of Municipalities website stated that Freehold Borough was seeking a part-time police director to manage the Freehold Borough Police Department.
According to the advertisement, the successful candidate would be responsible for developing and analyzing policy for the department, control and manage departmental resources, implement and monitor reporting systems, and analyze data and statistics.
There are about 30 sworn officers in the police department.
Individuals who were interested in applying for the position were asked to respond by Feb. 17.
The department has been led by Police Chief Glenn Roberts since Sept. 19, 2011.
According to the adopted ordinance, the police director would report to the borough administrator, mayor and council. He or she would serve as the administrative and executive head of the police department, establish rules and regulations for the police department, and oversee the discipline of its members.
