Dr. Gregg S. Berkowitz, the director of the Cartilage Restoration Center of New Jersey and a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute (AOSMI), Freehold Township, will perform a relatively new one-step cartilage repair procedure using living cartilage tissue from a juvenile donor for the first time at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township, this month.

DeNovo NT, a natural tissue graft, is the latest option in repairing damaged cartilage. In this procedure, orthopedic specialists plant juvenile living cells into the damaged areas of the knee or ankle.

According to Berkowitz, the advantage of using juvenile cartilage is that the adult cartilage does not have many living cells, which limits healing ability. Juvenile cartilage, however, has more living cells and, therefore, much better healing ability. Also, larger areas can be repaired compared to other one-step procedures.

Dr. Michael Greller, a board-certified fellowship-trained sports medicine orthopedic surgeon at Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute (AOSMI), Freehold Township, has performed a new orthopedic procedure. It is the first time this procedure has been done at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township.

The Arthrosurface HemiCap is a minimally invasive shoulder resurfacing procedure that opens up an important option for patients. In the past, patients with shoulder problems had limited options: therapy, cortisone injections, or a partial or total shoulder replacement.

The HemiCap resurfacing procedure, designed for those with arthritic lesions and osteonecrosis, or death of the bone, is much less invasive than shoulder replacement surgery. This procedure can also be used to repair the defects and damage done because of shoulder dislocations.
