On Sept. 11 at 8:30 a.m. the Monmouth County Park System will host a brief remembrance ceremony at the site of Monmouth County’s 9/11 memorial.
The 20-minute ceremony will include the Naval Weapons Station Earle Funeral Honors, bagpipers, an invocation by local clergy and flowers placed at the memorial.
The 9/11 memorial is at Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook, Ocean Boulevard, Atlantic Highlands. All are welcome to attend.
According to a press release from the county, Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook will also be open for extended hours on Sept. 11-13, from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., to provide additional opportunities for park patrons to visit the county’s 9/11 memorial.
The Municipal Art Society of New York Tribute in Lights, scheduled for Sept. 11 only, will be visible from Mount Mitchill, weather permitting.
Monmouth County’s 9/11 memorial has three symbolic components: a timeline walkway to recollect the events of Sept. 11, 2001; a stone base carved with the names, ages and hometowns of the 147 county residents who lost their lives that day; and an eagle sculpture with a beam from one of the fallen World Trade Center towers.
Set against views of New York, the memorial honors the lives lost and the fearless display of heroism by rescue teams and citizens who responded to the tragedy, according to the press release.
Monmouth County’s 9/11 memorial was dedicated in 2005 and made possible through donations to Monmouth County’s 9/11 Memorial Committee.
