Francis Howard Schnebbe III

Mr. Schnebbe, 84, of Toms River, died Nov. 17, 2007, at Bey Lea Village Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Toms River. Born in Manhattan, N.Y., he later moved to Freehold and was a graduate of Freehold High School, Freehold Borough. He also attended Rutgers University, New Brunswick. Mr. Schnebbe spent most of his life in furniture sales as the owner of Howdon Furniture in Toms River. He then worked at Steinbach department store in Manalapan, Kings Furniture Co., and finally Silvert’s Furniture in Freehold, from which he retired on Jan. 1, 2000. Mr. Schnebbe also enjoyed bartending at various local restaurants, including the Captain’s Inn in Forked River, the Kings Grant Inn in Cape May Court House, Citta’s Salon in Beachwood and the Bay Head Yacht Club in Bay Head. During World War II, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, where he was promoted to technical sergeant. He served as a navigator/bombardier in the VMB-443 bombing squadron in the South Pacific. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross medal with two gold stars, as well as 10 Air Medals. Mr. Schnebbe served as past commandant of the Freehold Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and was a lifetime member of both the Marine Corps League’s Cpl. Philip A. Reynolds Detachment and the Freehold First Aid Squad. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Matthews Schnebbe, in 1996, as well as a son, Robert Allan Schnebbe, in 1981. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Lynne and Michael Barlet Sr. of Satellite Beach, Fla., Gretchen and Michael Santasiero of Orlando, Fla., and Pamela and William McCann of Toms River; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A service was held at Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold. Interment was private.
