Bus service to begin on Sept. 18
MARLBORO — The shuttle bus that will transport commuters between Free-hold and the Aberdeen-Matawan train station — and make four stops in Marlboro — will begin operating on Sept. 18, Business Administrator Chris Marion told the Township Council on Aug. 14.
Marion had told the council in July that the township and Monmouth County, which are working together on the project, would try to get the program off the ground in August.
The bus service will pick up and drop off people during peak commuter hours. The fee for the service will be $2 per ride. Commuters will be able to park at only one of the four stops in Marlboro — on Route 79 and Bucks Lane, across from the former Chrysler dealership, Marion said. Between 15 and 20 parking spaces will be available at the site. Commuters will be able to park at the site on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The other pick-up and drop-off sites in Marlboro will be at Route 79 and Ryan Road, on the northbound and southbound shoulders of Route 79; Route 79 and Newton Street, where southbound buses will stop on the corner of Route 79 and Girard Street and northbound buses will stop at the NJ Transit bus shelter; and Route 79 and Freneau Drive, where buses will stop at the northbound and southbound shoulders of Route 79. In addition to the stops in Marlboro, there is also a stop at the Freehold bus station at West Main and Throckmorton streets, Freehold.
The first bus will arrive at the Freehold bus station at 5:30 a.m. and pick up commuters on Route 79 and Ryan Road, Marlboro, at 5:38 a.m. The bus will continue picking up riders at intervals varying between 30 minutes and one hour at each stop. The last stop in the morning for Marlboro commuters who want to arrive at the train station will be at 8:25 a.m. at Route 79 and Freneau Street.
In the afternoon, the first bus will leave the Aberdeen-Matawan Train Station at 4:45 p.m. and the last bus to Marlboro will depart from the train station at 8:15 p.m. In between, there will be buses leaving the train station at 6:05 p.m. 7:15 p.m. and 8:05 p.m.
