FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP — Eugene Golub and David Salkin won re-election to three-years terms on the Township Committee in the Nov. 5 election.

Less that half of the township’s 19,901 registered voters came out to vote. With 8,439 ballots cast (42.5 percent of registered voters), the two Republican incumbents each garnered more than 5,300 votes.

According to Romeo Cascaes, township clerk, there were six write-in votes for the Township Committee, each with one vote.

Golub and Salkin have both said they are concerned about reductions in municipal and school funding provided by the state and the affect those cuts will have on property taxes. They said they plan to make those concerns a priority during the next three years.

Salkin said township officials are going to continue to try to find ways to save money for the taxpayers even though the decreases in state aid have had a significant impact on the municipal and school budgets. He said the township will continue to put pressure on the state Legislature to find better funding methods for education.

Golub said the committee will continue to focus on zoning issues and both candidates agreed that being proactive in controlling development as the township approaches the buildout point is an important issue.

In addition, open space is a priority issue. The incumbents said 30 percent of the entire township is permanent, dedicated open space. Within the past year the township purchased 2 square miles of open space with the help of the Trust for Public Land and the state, Golub said.

The committeemen plan to use newly adopted ordinances that dictate the style of residential and commercial properties and the look of scenic roads to protect the quasi-colonial atmosphere of the township.

Salkin said the biggest challenges facing the township are quality of life issues such as regional traffic, development and taxes.
