Upswing in warm weather is favorable to local golfers

November’s unseasonably warmer weather was a boon for both golfers and courses alike.

Middlesex County’s Tamarack Golf Course in East Brunswick reported 2,266 rounds played through Nov. 23, compared to the 2014 November figure of 779 rounds.

“You have a lot of fair-weather golfers,” said Jeff Byrnes, Tamarack assistant manager for the Middlesex County Improvement Authority (MCIA), the entity that operates the courses. “Once September comes along, they are normally putting their clubs away – but not this year.”

The volume means additional course coverage as well, as ground crews battle to keep up with newly fallen leaves that litter the grounds each morning.

Regardless of the weather, all of the MCIA’s courses, namely The Meadows at Middlesex in Plainsboro and Raritan Landing in Piscataway, are open year-round.

“Extreme rains and snow will basically shut down the operations – sometimes for a day or sometimes for weeks, like we saw last winter,” said Rod Brennan, MCIA director of golf facilities. “We’ve been fortunate that the weather has been playing in our favor this fall. I guess the same can be said for our patrons too, because there’s nothing more picturesque than the backdrop of autumn foliage when you’re out here trying to enjoy one of the great pastimes of our day.”
