Construction worker dies after fall from mall roof in East Brunswick

EAST BRUNSWICK — A construction worker who fell from the roof of a building at the Summerhill Square shopping center on Route 18 on Jan. 11 died hours later, according to police.

Michael Testa, 40, of Brick, fell about 30 feet to the ground from the roof of a building under construction around 1:08 p.m. Township police responded and gave emergency medical aid to the man, and the East Brunswick Rescue Squad transported him to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.

Testa was employed by Lunar Steel of North Brunswick, police said.

The East Brunswick Police Detective Bureau and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident.

Summerhill Square, which will eventually comprise 150,000 square feet, replaced the old Meyer’s shopping center. The anchor stores of the new mall are Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us, which were completed in late 2008. The developer more recently obtained an economic recovery grant to continue construction on a 50,000-squarefoot building to house additional stores.
