Bat tests positive for rabies in East Brunswick

EAST BRUNSWICK — A bat tested positive for rabies in the vicinity of Farm Circle Road and Brantwood Court.

On Nov. 12, the animal control officer for East Brunswick responded to a call about a bat that had died at a resident’s home, according to the Middlesex County Office of Health Services.

The bat was sent to the New Jersey Department of Health Laboratory for testing and was found to be positive for rabies on Nov. 13.

This is the fourth positive rabies specimen identified in East Brunswick this year and the 11th in Middlesex County, according to the Middlesex County Office of Health Services.

Residents should report wild animals showing signs of unusual behavior to the local police department. Additionally, it is recommended that residents avoid contact with wild animals and immediately report any bites from wild or domestic animals to a local health department and consult a physician as soon as possible.

Finally, all family pets should be up to date on their rabies vaccinations and licenses, according to Office of Health Services.
