Central High School students walked away with several awards at the South Blue Regional DECA Conference in Cherry Hill.
DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) is a co-curricular, student-centered organization that provides marketing, management, and entrepreneurial activities to help students become skilled, employable workers.
Eighty students from CHS’ Marketing I and II, Sports and Entertainment Marketing, and Business Administration classes attended the competition. Each student selected one event in which to compete. Events included Apparel and Accessories, Business Services, Food Marketing, Full-Serve Restaurant Management, Finance, Hospitality, Marketing Management, Quick-Serve Restaurant Management, Retail Marketing, Sports and Entertainment, Travel and Tourism and Vehicles and Petroleum. The competition included a 100-question multiple choice test and two role-playing sections.
Julia Mooney (Apparel and Accessories Associate Level), Cristin Lyons (Apparel and Accessories Associate Level), and Lauren Willie (Quick Serve Restaurant Management) placed in the top three for the written test in their event.
Lauren Willie (Quick Serve Restaurant Management), Emily Fitzpatrick and Joe Stellino (Sports and Entertainment Marketing), CJ Moore (Retail Merchandising Associate Level), and Cristin Lyons (Apparel and Accessories Associate Level) placed in the top three for their first role-play.
Sarah Long (Apparel and Accessories Associate Level) and Adam Friedland (Food Marketing Management Level) placed in the top three for their second role-play.
Alex Chalier (Vehicles and Petroleum), Tom Verbeyst (Vehicles and Petroleum), Katie Sheridan (Business Services Marketing), Cristin Lyons (Apparel and Accessories Associate Level), Judy Smith (Apparel and Accessories Management Level), Jason Chang (Food Marketing Management Level), Adam Friedland (Food Marketing Management Level), Lauren Willie (Quick Serve Restaurant Management), CJ Moore (Retail Merchandising Associate Level), Luis Cruz (Marketing Management Services), Jimmy Gilroy (Marketing Management Services), and Emily Fitzpatrick and Joe Stellino (Sports and Entertainment Marketing) finished in the top 16 overall in their events and continued on to the Blue DECA State Conference in Cherry Hill.
At the DECA State Conference, Jimmy Gilroy placed in the top four for his second role-play and placed in the top 12 overall in Marketing Management Services while Katie Sheridan placed sixth overall in Business Services Marketing. Meanwhile, Alex Chalier, Jason Chang, Luis Cruz, and Tom Verbeyst attended a Leadership Workshop at the DECA State Conference.
