UPPER FREEHOLD — Allentown Caging Equipment Co. broke ground Aug. 31 for a new 46,000-square-foot facility behind its existing 100,000-square-foot space on Route 526.
Kevin Johnson, marketing manager of Allentown Caging, a manufacturer of research laboratory equipment, said the company needs to expand to meet its growing business. He said the company recently was awarded a contract with the University of Colorado.
The expansion is one of many for Allentown Caging, which has been a family-run company since 1967. However, it is the first added building for the company in almost 30 years, Mr. Johnson said.
The company employed 180 people last year, and has 240 employees now, including a night crew, Mr. Johnson said.
Construction on the facility by V.J. Scozzari & Sons of Lawrenceville is expected to begin by winter and be completed by spring 2002.
